ECPE Challenge Unit 6: Big Brother

By way of introduction to the topic of surveillance and privacy in this Unit, let's get one thing straight: Big Brother is not just the name of an inane reality TV show. In fact, that show takes its name from one of the best-known novels of the 20th century, George Orwell's 1984.

  1. This book portrays a strict government which tries to control people's minds by torturing them and manipulating them so that people could understand who is in charge. The government obviously violates the human rights by not allowing them to have any kind of relationship with each other and by monitoring them. If anyone tried to rebel they were cruelly punished and unfortunately they were made to obey.

  2. The story of George Orwell's book 1984 was very realistic for our generation. I think that the author conveys the message that through technology governments can manipulate the citizents. This point of view is scary and I believe that we have to consider the development of technology in this area and we must not allow some people to monitor our lives and take advantage of our freedom.

  3. While watching that video, I understood that this book represents a strict society, in which people were treated in an inhumane way and also all of their rights were violated. They didn't have the right to express their personal opinion or feelings as there were very strict laws, punishments and government was controlling citizens' minds. Thus, all people were manipulated and taken advantage of by being monitored constantly. I am totally convinced that in a society like this people weren't able to live in a humane way, because they were made to abide by every law without considering , they were unable to communicate or make relationships in order to interact, socialize and generally speaking they were treated just like robots.
