Useful essay-phrases:

Useful grammatical structures for essays

  • Causative: have (in all tenses) + object + past participle
  • Subjunctive: (advise,recommend,suggest,etc) + (that) + subject + (should) + bare infinitive
  • Wish/If only: wish + past simple ~~ wish + past perfect ~~ wish + subject + would + bare inf.
  • Passive voice: be(in the correct form) + past participle
  • Modals: must/mustn't/ can/can't/should/etc. ~~~ Most of the modals + bare inf. = present
  •                                                                                Modals + have + past participle = past
