''Le petit prince!''

Readers have always loved books that have become classic novels. One of which is ''Le petit Prince'', which has been successful for more than fifty five years. It is true that it is an intriguing book that has provoked deep emotions in all its readers.

At the beginning of the book, the little prince, who lives on an unknown planet as big as a home, meets a lost man.The lost man tries to fix his plane so that he can go back home, but at the same time he faces up one handsome sensitive and weird kid, as all the others, who is in love with a flower and likes seeing the sunshine.

The plot is gripping. The prince tries to explain to the man the mysery and the loneliness of people. It is true that every discussion of the little prince is the search for the reality. This meeting finally turns out to be a love story, but unfortunately the man has to leave.

There is a variety of illustrations and the characters are well-drawn. The prince is loyal, unpredictable and sticks to his best friend, the little rose, through thick and thin.

The author, Antoine De Sand- Exipery, has moved beyond the usual formula for children's -and not only- books and has mixed imagination with love and deep emotions. What makes the book one of the best of its kind is that it is an alternative read with ingenuity and the innocence of a small kid.

All in all, I dot not hesitate to recommend ''Le petit Prince'', as it is one of the best options for a gift.

Nick's summer story

A SUMMER STORY

A sudden, loud voice had interrupted my deep sleep. Yes, I could clearly hear a girl shrieking. ''Help me out''. Spontaneously , I put on my pants, my white T-shirt and and grabbed my friend's knife. Her voice was now barely audible. I rushed out of the tent... Inadvertently, I had to act as a hero.

It had all begun the previous morning, when I, along with a couple of friends were setting off for a 3-day trip to Sougia,  in Chania, the annual venue of dozen of campers. We arrived, set up the tents and our equipment and went straight to the sea. Intrigued by the charming green- blue wate, and entranced by the natural day, we spent hours on end on the beach. The time lapsed, it was almost ten, as I recall, when inquired the others: '' I' ll go to grab a coffee, would you like anything? I'll foot the bill.'' Taking their orders, I went straight to the canteen.

After waiting for half an hour ( the service was particularly awful ), I returned back to the tents to find everybody else sleeping. ''Insomnia'', I whispered ironically. Reluctant to sleep and, unlike my friends, still feeling vigorous, I chose to take a walk. For a strange reason, I felt tis bizarre emotion of being spied. ''Come to your senses, I scolded myself, '' I am on vacation, not the hero of a science- fiction film. Half an hour later, the soft noise of the sea and the consecutive sounds from swarms of insects caused me sleepiness...

No sooner had I managed to close my eyes than I woke up out of the blue. I followed ''the voices'' up to a point. After that point, deathly silence. I stood there, frozen by fear, on a rock, utterly disappointed. Rivults of sweat were running down my face. I was on the point of  '' aborting the mission '', when a blinding light came to my eyes. The despondency had vanished... I knew I had to jump on this truck... I did so; and then an intense pain on the head... What was going to be the outcome of this thriller?

My friend John, who was above me patted me on the back in a friendly way. ''Wake up thrill-seeker'', he said in a serious tone. ''I guess you are totally oblivious of the fact that that you caused inconvenience throughout the camping with your shouts. ''You must have seen a nightmare. I can't explain it differently.

Half an an hour later, I woke up drinking my coffee with friends, endeavoring to describe them my weird dream. ''I was under the misapprehension that it was you Marianne'', I said. She laughed. The impolite waite came towards us asking for a tip. ''Never pat a burning dog's fur, pal'',  I replied calmly.

Environmental problems/Yes there is solution...

A variety of environmental problems now affect our entire world.  As globalization continues and the earth's natural processes transform local problems into international issues, few societies are being left untouched by major environmental problems. Some of the most intriguing problems nowadays are:
1.Mammal Extinction     2.The Ocean Dead Zones     3.Collapsing Fish Stock     4.Destruction of the Rain Forest     5.Polar Sea Ice Loss    6.CO2 Levels in the Atmosphere     7.Population Explosion  8.Water pollution(acid rain)  9.Toxins 10. Waste

It is true that every environmental problem has causes, numerous effects, and most importantly, a solution. So everyone has to act. This is the only way we can save our planet. So :''THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY.''

Listening to university lectures

Watch it on Academic Earth

Philosophy of Death, Yale University Introductory Lecture: Listen and write the missing words.

Professor Shelly Kagan: All right, so this is Philosophy 176. The class is on death. My name is Shelly Kagan. The very first thing I want to do is to invite you to call me Shelly. That is, if we meet on the street, you come talk to me during office hours, you ask some question; Shelly's the name that I respond to. I will, eventually, respond to Professor Kagan, but the synapses take a bit longer for that. It's not the name I immediately 1.__________________. I have found that over the years, fewer and fewer students feel comfortable calling me Shelly. When I was young, it seemed to work. Now I'm gray and august. But if you're comfortable with it, it's the name that I prefer to be called by.

Now, as I say, this is a class on death. But it's a philosophy class, and what that means is that the set of topics that we're going to be talking about in this class are not 2._________ to the topics that other classes on death might try to cover. So the first thing I want to do is say something about the things we won't be talking about that you might 3.____________ expect or hope that a class on death would talk about, so that if this is not the class you were looking for, you still have time to go check out some other class.

So here are some things that a class on death could cover that we won't talk about. What I primarily have in mind are sort of 4.________________and 5._____________ questions about the nature of death, or the phenomenon of death. So, a class on death might well have a discussion of the process of dying and coming to 6.____________ yourself with the fact that you're going to die. Some of you may know about Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' discussion of the so-called five stages of dying. There's 7.__________, and then there's anger, and then there's bargaining. I actually don't remember the five stages. We're not going to talk about that.

Similarly, we're not going to talk about the funeral industry in America and how it rips off people, which it does, in their moments of grief and 8.______________ and overcharges them for the various things that it offers. We're not going to talk about that. We're not going to talk about the process of grieving or 9.___________________. We're not going to talk about sociological attitudes that we have towards the dying in our culture and how we tend to try to keep the dying hidden from the rest of us. These are all perfectly important topics, but they're not, as I say, topics that we're going to be talking about in this class.

So what will we talk about? Well, the things we'll talk about are philosophical questions that 10.___________ as we begin to think about the nature of death. Like this. In broad scope, the first half of the class is going to be metaphysics, for those of you who are familiar with the philosophical piece of 11.___________. And roughly, the second half of the class is going to be value theory.

So, the first half of the class is going to be concerned with questions about the nature of death. What happens when we die? Indeed, to get at that question, the first thing we're going to have to think about is what are we? What kind of an 12.__________ is a person? In particular, do we have souls, and for this class when I talk about a soul, what I'm going to mean is sort of a bit of philosophical jargon. I'm going to mean something 13.______________, something distinct from our bodies. Do we have immaterial souls, something that might survive the death of our body? And if not, what does that 14.______ about the nature of death?

What kind of an event is death? What is it for me to survive? What would it mean for me to survive my death? What does it mean for me to survive tonight? That is, you know, somebody's going to be here 15.___________ to the class on Thursday, 16.___________ that will be me. What is it for that person who's there on Thursday to be the same person as the person who's sitting here lecturing to you today? These are questions about the nature of personal 17._____________. Pretty clearly, to think about death and continued existence and survival, we have to get clear about the nature of personal identity. These sorts of questions will occupy us for 18.___________ the first half of the semester.

And then we'll turn to value questions. If death is the end, is death bad? Now, of course, most of us are immediately and strongly inclined to think that death is bad. But there are a set of philosophical puzzles about how death could be bad. To sort of give you a quick taste, if after my death I won't exist, how could anything be bad for me? How could anything be bad for something that doesn't exist? So how could death be bad?

So it's not that the result is going to be that I'm going to try to convince you that death isn't bad, but it takes actually a little bit of work to pin down precisely what is it about death that's bad and how can it be death? Is there more than one thing about death that makes it bad? We'll turn to questions like that. If death is bad, then one might wonder would 19. ___________ be a good thing? That's a question that we'll think about.

Or, more generally, we'll worry about how should the fact that I'm going to die affect the way I live? What should my attitude be towards my mortality? Should I be afraid of death, for example? Should I despair at the fact that I'm going to die?

Finally, we'll turn to questions about suicide. Many of us think that given the valuable and precious thing that life is, suicide makes no sense. You're throwing away the only life you're ever going to have. And so we'll end the semester by thinking about questions along the lines of the 20._______________ and morality of suicide. So roughly speaking, that's where we're going. First half of the class, metaphysics; second half of the class, value theory.

Harry potter-review-

Harry Potter is one of the latest blockbusters to hit our cinemas. Based on the novel by J.K.Rowling, it is set in the United Kigdom, in the 90's.
It is, at heart, a fantasy adventure film. The first one, is te best one, in my view. Harry is an orphan, who discovers at the age of eleven that he is a wizard, while living with ordinary, non-magical people. Children, with similar skills, like Harry are invited to become students at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizadry, in which most of the events of the novel take place. Harry develops through his adolecence, how to overcome the problems that he faces. Moreover, there are magical, social and emotional challenges such as friendships and exams. There have been seven novels all in all, all of which have become films and each of them describes some of Harry's challenges amd his new life in the school.
Directed by David Heymann, it captured the atmosphere of a magical world. It has a quality cast with Daniel Radcliffe, as the main hero. He gives a spellbinding performance as Harry the main character. The film , is in general entralling, easy to follow and straightforward. It is vivid and exciting.
Film viewers will be excited by the film but the readers may feel disappointed. The book is long and rich in details and events. Unfortunately only a few of which are portrayed in the film and a vast number of cuts have been made, on the other hand the description in the film completely squares this with the one in the book.
Taking everything into account, I would have no hesitation on recommneding this film , as it has an imaginative vision of another magical world.

Report

Introduction
The following report relates to my recent visit to two language schools: the ''Learn and play'' and the ''Teaching home'', which I believe we should recommend on our brochure.

Size and location
The ''Learn and play'' is a roomy school,as it is centrally located. Unlike ''Learn and play'', ''Teaching home'' is a nice school on the outskirts of town.It may be considered to be a little off the beaten track but is well worth having your kids taught there. The classes can take a small number of children up to seven students.

Facilities
''Learn and play'' includes a vast array of facilities. Firstly internet access is offered, so students are likely to investigate information or learn easily. Furthermore, the headteacher has the conception to organise excyrsions with students. What is more there is a library, a laboratory and a video room.
Although ''Learn and play'' has a massive number of facilities, ''Teaching home'' has a list of useful facilities. To begin with there is free internet access and space available so that students can have their laptops.

Staff
Whereas ''Learn and play'' has a variety of teachers, ''Teaching home'' has 3 teachers who are effective and teach discipline to their students. They are also well qualified,a s there is the ''one to one style'' of teaching.

Conclusion
My overall opinion is that, even though the two schools are very different, I have no hesitation in recommending both of them to students.

A letter to the Prime Minister

Dear Prime Minister,

I decided to write this letter, because I am really concerned about all these problems our country faces. I believe that you are trying to do your best so as for the country to emerge from the economic crisis but I do not believe that you find the most effective ways to succeed in this. I am going to present you with two of the most serious problems that Greece should deal with and also some ways that this should be done.

As far as I am concerned, the most serious problem that you should address immediately is the diminishing state funds. At the moment, you are trying to reduce all the expenses, such as funds to hospitals but you also force people to pay enormous taxes to the Ministry of Finance. I totally agree with the minimization of the outlays, but how can an unemployed person pay all the increasing taxes? I believe that the most effective solution would be to set up a graded tax system depending on the savings of each individual. For example a wealthy person should pay a higher amount of money than an unemployed person.

The second problem that you should deal with is to apply justice to all politicians that caused all this harm to our country. Well-known politicians’ names acquired publicity vecause of extracting millions of euros from the States Funds so as to buy expensive vessels, go on
lavish trips with their entire family receiving no legal punishment. But what would happen if ordinary residents of our country cannot afford to pay their taxes? They would suffer from eviction or be sentenced to years of prison simply because of a few hundred euros they would owe. As a result of this discrimination, all people are indignant; they try to stand up for their rights and have an equal treatment with everybody.

Even if you managed to these two serious problems, I remain certain that you would have one more ‘problem’ to cope with in this hazardous situation; all of us!

Yours faithfully,

Eleni Lagoudaki

The last post!!!

http://penmachine-bu.appspot.com/2011/05/the-last-post

This is a really moving text, posted by Christina on Sotirias blog (http://sotiria-english.blogspot.com)!

It is written by a man who was suffering from cancer and his last wish was to publish the text on the Internet. In my opinion, the main purpose for this publication was to leave a good memory of him on his two daughters and show them his love but also to find the courage and express all his feelings.

It is a text that touches everyone, and I think its worth reading.

A post taken from the Students' Page

When you study new vocabulary, you need to make sure that you are aware of five things:

1) the spelling of the word
2) what part of speech it is
3) its pronounciation
4) its basic meanings (remember the polysemy that characterizes the English language!)
5) the ways it can used within the sentence

Concerning the first four aspects of a lexical item, visiting www.dictionary.com or consulting your glossary, dictionary or, of course, teacher would help a lot in consolidating new vocabulary.

What about the fifth aspect, though?

Since glossaries do not always offer example sentences, you can visit sentence.yourdictionary.com, type the word whose use confuses you and get a bunch of ideas about its place within complex or simpler sentences.

Advanced students who create vocabulary calendars every month, like Alice and the 'Literature Blog' writers (read more about this type of task), will surely find this site to be extremely useful!

Why do people pirate CDs and how does it affect the Music Industry??

Nowaday's there are very few people that buy authentic CD's from the Music Stores. Most of them prefer to purchase them on the Internet or to buy a copy from them from the central market. But why do people pirate CD's and how does it affect the Music Industry?

First of all, the main reason on why people pirate CD's, is that they have a very low cost and if you download from the Internet it is usually free, but the quality remains the same. Because of the economic crisis we face at the moment, it is really difficult for someone to pay these money so as to derive pleasure from a song. In addition, you can buy or download the song from the Internet any time of the day you want, without trying to find the piece of time to go to the shops. Finally, after you buy the CD, you may regret it, and think it was a waste of money because it did not satisfy you. However, getting the product illegally you never face a problem like this.

Although this act is really beneficial for the buyers it is really hazardous for the music industry. First of all, in the last two years all the music stores in my country have closed. Almost no-one was buying things from them. In addition, through the years less CD's are produced because it is a really expensive procedure. If a music company wants to create a music album, then they have to rent studios, to find somebody to write the lyrics and the music, but also a vocalist. All these could be said to cost a fortune. So they prefer bring out a CD which is well-prepared so as for it to bring the biggest success.

In my opinion, if the music companies would try to make a lower profit from each music allbum, then the music industries would thrive!

A modern time capsule!

The little boy decided to open the box. He was curious as he had discovered it by diggin deeply in the ground. Iside the box, there were two things. One computer and one old piece of paper. His parents explained him that this box was a time capsule. Now I am also asked to choose two items to include in my own capsule. But , what picture would I want to give future generations? In my book, I will include one book and one collage of the fascinating beaches of Greece.
To begin with, I would include a book, to show the intiguing side of it. What is more, Iwoyld like to arouse peoples' interest,in the future. In my view, books will not exist ,so this one will be the unique hint of books. In would depict my love in reading books.
The next item, I intend to include would be a collage of all the wonderful beaches of Greece,a s a reminder of the beauty and the culture of our country. The person, who would be stricken and would like to visit these beaches if they existed, of course. This vision, would lead to more financial benefits to my country, as people from the future may wish to go all over the country to see the beaches.
All in all, I choose the book and the picture with the beaches due to the fact that these are two characteristic examples of nowadays'society. Will these items seem strange to those who find them?I donot know but I donot think that I will get an answer. I can only hope that future generations will find them useful.

report

Subject: Recent complaints regarding the leisure centre.

I ntroduction
The purpose of this report is to review the recent complaints made about the leisure centre and to suggest the steps we should take to improve the situation.

Sports Facilities
1. Equipment
There have been several complaints about the quality of the equipment. Being in a state of disrepair due to the improper maintainance is quite worrying for such a well organised centre. Thus, i suggest we implement maintenance settle as well as purchase more equipment so as to rectify the majority of the problems.
2. Pool
A number of guests have complained that the water temperature is low. Checks have revealed that the regulator is out of order. Moreover, it is not well cleaned causing a variety of ailments in the swimmers. I propose we hire staff in order to clean the pool regularly and also maintain it.
3. Booking system
Complaints here have been about the double booking dealing place probleme. There have been difficulties in this field because of the inefficiency of the current system. So, we could repair it by installing computerised system properly utilized by the personnel.

Cafeteria
1. Staff
Some of the clients complained about the staff manners as well as theis unwillingness to satisfy their demands. Also, possible delays regarding serving at peak hours due to the inadequate staff are mentined. We could deal with these problems by providing sufficient staff training and of course by hiring more staff in the longrun.
2. Food
complaints here have been about the taste and the variety. Bland dishes almost inedible and limited options were the basic problems. Athough, we changed the chef we did not manage any improvement. So, i propose we cater for different diets providing an abundance of food and also focus on healthy alternatives trying to supplant the junk food.

Parking
The more attractive our centre becomes, the more guests will be attracted. Bearing in mind that parking is already a major problem it will deteriorate. Not having the appropriate capacity for parking we could encourage the guests to use the public transport in an attempt to alleviate this.

Conclusion
Most of the problems highlighted by the complaints will be quite straightforward to solve. We have already rectified problems in some areas and await your approval to act on the outstandind issues.
