Climate Change - Individual and Governmental Action

Agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol try to reduce the amount of damage to the environment through governmental action. Do you think that responsibility for the environment is up to governments or should it be the responsibility of each citizen?

In attempting to answer the difficult question as to who is primarily responsible for taking action to tackle the climate crisis, here are three resources that may help:

1. A recent (July 2019) article from the Guardian, arguing that that the main burden lies with government, as individuals cannot be expected to make difficult choices of their own free will.

2. A slightly different take from the BBC, arguing that our individual choices as consumers will put pressure on governments and businesses to make necessary changes.

3. A short debate on British morning TV on whether non-violent civil disobedience by ordinary people is the right way to achieve government action.
