Imagining a different city

How do we see the city in which we live? What will it be like five or ten years from now? Do we dare to imagine it could be different? In short, what kind of environment do we want to live in? How should we move around the city, and how could we make it more livable?

To help you consider this important issue, here are two relevant articles:

1. The story of how Seoul, a city of almost ten million people, reinvented itself by converting a major highway into a riverside park. There were winners and losers of course, but most people now agree that this ambitious project has vastly improved the quality of life in the city centre.

2. A very recent article (in Greek!) by a scientist at the University of Crete Museum of Natural History, setting out his views on how our city could be transformed.

Having read both articles, write a blog post responding to some of the points raised in the second article (in English, of course!), and offering your own ideas on what kind of Heraklion we should be striving for.

  1. Heraklion is the forth big city in Greece. However, this fact does not reflected in its structure. More specifically, the town comprised by many old buildings, which are not in a good condition and its roads are not well constructed. Furthermore, trees are not exist in Heraclion and the few that are placed in the sidewalks are wilts. All of these lead citizens to complain and not apreciate their town. The future of this town is not so well eather. These claimed is due to the fact that the government want to extend the city and create more buildings. Therefore, the problems that will be caused are more than the benefits of this expansion. I believe that we have to imagine our city more eco friendly and more funcional for the citizens. Therefore, I believe that the mayor must demolish old builds, which are in a poor condition and create there parks or places, in which citizens can spend their time happily.

  2. In the past our city used to be in a better condition, but over the years it has completely changed. First of all, the roads in our city are in a poor condition because they are most times uneven and citizens , for example those who ride a bike, are in a great risk. Furthermore, people used to take more care of the city. For instance, they would plant and were more interested in environmental issues. By contrast, we can see that a huge amount of rubbish is thrown away, which increases the level of pollution.

In ten years from now our city will have been extremely polluted, different and damaged. All the rubish will be thrown into the sea and in the corners of the road. Adityionally, parks and greenery places will have been turned into shopping malls, parkings or buildings.

To improve the quality of life in our city, stricter laws or fines need to be enforced or speaches by experts have to be organised in the city center to raise public awareness. Moreover, the government should take action and make the first step to motivate citizens to change their lifestyle and do care of their city.
